Cayenne is situated at the mouth of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic Coast and is the capital of the French overseas région of Guiana, which consists of an almost inaccessible rainforest and a coastal strip with beaches, the waters contain sharks though, and the land was ignored by Spanish explorers, who found the region too hot and too poor to be colonised. Located off the coast, in the Caribbean, is Devil's Island, the notorious penal colony known from the book "Papillon", where more than 80.000 prisoners served time and many died. We have big fishing industry, but also sugar, gold mining, timber and formerly of course Cayenne pepper which originated right here in my hometown. I work up to 14 hours a day as a tallygirl, which means one who keeps a tally of quantity and weight of goods produced or shipped or received at a sugar refinery. I'm single and need the money badly.
